“What is a GEO checklist for small business?”
Direct Answer
A GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) checklist is the set of technical and content fixes that let AI systems like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Copilot actually read, trust and cite your business. Unlike classic SEO, GEO is roughly 80% positioning and structured proof (reviews, schema, consistent facts) and only 20% technical crawlability — the 10 steps below cover both halves in the order that moves the needle fastest for a small business with no in-house dev team.
What’s in this checklist
- Confirm AI crawlers can actually reach your site
- Make sure your content renders without JavaScript
- Take paywalls and logins off anything you want cited
- Add FAQ and review schema markup
- Write answer-first, scannable content
- Standardize your business facts everywhere
- Build a real review and citation footprint
- Get listed in AI-trusted directories and comparison sites
- Run an AI visibility audit across platforms
- Track citations, not just rankings
Every one of these steps is something a small business owner (or one marketing hire) can action without a developer. We ordered them by leverage: the first few unblock AI crawlers from reading you at all, the middle steps make your content easy to lift into an answer, and the last few build the off-site proof that makes AI systems trust you enough to actually name you.
01 Confirm AI crawlers can actually reach your site
Check your robots.txt for accidental blocks on GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended and CCBot. Many WordPress security plugins block “unknown” bots by default, which quietly excludes you from every AI answer engine. Also check your CDN or firewall (Cloudflare bot-fight mode is a common culprit) isn’t challenging or rejecting these user agents before they ever reach your pages.
02 Make sure your content renders without JavaScript
Most AI crawlers do a lightweight fetch rather than a full browser render. If your key facts (pricing, hours, services, location) only appear after client-side JavaScript runs, an AI crawler may see a near-empty page. Server-render or statically generate the content that actually answers buyer questions, even if the rest of the page is a JS-heavy app shell.
03 Take paywalls and logins off anything you want cited
Content locked behind a login, gated form, or paywall cannot be cited, full stop — AI engines cannot get past a login screen. If a case study or pricing page is your best proof point, it needs a public URL an AI crawler can fetch without authentication.
04 Add FAQ and review schema markup
Structured data is the closest thing GEO has to a technical shortcut: FAQPage schema, Review/AggregateRating schema and Organization schema give AI systems machine-readable facts instead of forcing them to infer meaning from prose. It won’t guarantee a citation, but it removes ambiguity that otherwise gets you skipped in favor of a competitor with cleaner markup.
How to actually measure whether the checklist worked
Most GEO checklists stop at the tasks, which is why most GEO work never demonstrably improves anything. The measurement step is what separates a programme that gets better from one that is merely performed.
Build a fixed question set. Twenty to forty questions a real buyer asks before choosing someone like you, written in their words rather than your category language. Buyers do not ask about “workflow orchestration”; they ask how to stop retyping things between two systems.
Run the same list monthly. Across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. Record three things per question: whether you were cited, which page was cited, and which competitors appeared. Do not change the questions between months, because the trend is the entire signal and a one-off snapshot tells you nothing.
Expect Perplexity to move first. It runs a live search and cites what it retrieves, so it behaves closest to a search engine and picks up new pages within days to a few weeks. ChatGPT is markedly more conservative and usually needs the page referenced elsewhere first. If neither is citing you after a quarter, the problem is the content rather than the timeline.
The three checklist items that matter most
If you only do three things from the list above, do these.
Put an original claim on the page. A number you generated, a method you named, a pattern you observed, a test you ran. Answer engines cite pages holding something they do not already have. A thorough summary of a known topic is precisely what the model already knows, which is why well-written pages routinely rank and never get quoted.
Move the answer to the top of each section. The cited unit is two to four sentences that fully answer one question without needing the surrounding paragraphs. Content that builds to a conclusion rarely gets pulled, however good the conclusion is.
Make your entity details consistent everywhere. Company description, founding date, services and named people, identical across your site, LinkedIn, Crunchbase and directory listings. Models resolve identity across sources, and inconsistency makes you a low-confidence entity while a confident competitor gets cited instead. Dull work, disproportionate return.

05 Write answer-first, scannable content
Lead each section with the direct answer in the first sentence, then support it. Use real headings (not bolded paragraph text), short paragraphs, and bullet lists. AI systems extract answers by lifting self-contained chunks of text — content written narrative-first with the payoff buried in paragraph four rarely gets lifted cleanly.
06 Standardize your business facts everywhere
Name, pricing, service area, hours and claims need to match across your website, Google Business Profile, directories and review sites. AI systems cross-reference multiple sources before citing a fact with confidence; inconsistent numbers (a $99 rate on your site vs $149 on a directory) is one of the fastest ways to get quietly excluded from an answer.
07 Build a real review and citation footprint
Reviews, testimonials and third-party mentions function as trust signals AI models weigh heavily — this is the “80% strategic” half of GEO. A small business with 40 recent, detailed Google reviews and a few local press mentions will out-cite a competitor with better on-page SEO but a thin review profile.
08 Get listed in AI-trusted directories and comparison sites
ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot lean heavily on aggregator and comparison content (industry directories, “best of” listicles, G2/Capterra-style sites) as source material. Getting your business correctly listed and described on the directories AI models already trust is often faster than waiting for your own domain to earn authority.
09 Run an AI visibility audit across platforms
Manually query ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot and Google AI Overviews with the questions your buyers actually ask (“best [service] in [city]”, “how much does [service] cost”) and record whether you appear, and who does instead. This is the single fastest way to find out where you’re invisible before spending a budget fixing the wrong thing.
10 Track citations, not just rankings
Classic rank tracking doesn’t capture AI visibility. Track how often your brand or URL gets cited across AI platforms over time (server log analysis for AI crawler hits, or a dedicated AEO/GEO monitoring tool), the same way you’d track keyword rankings for SEO. If you don’t measure it, you can’t tell whether the 9 steps above are actually working.
